I decided to buy a shuffleboard this year. Playing shuffleboard/sjoelen will help us (a little) during the total lockdown we face in the Netherlands. This blog explains the game and the joy of playing it with more generations.

Shuffleboard/sjoelen

In these last days of the year, lots of people gather with their (not too extended) family, as I do with mine.

Before the holidays started, I thought of what we could do since we’re in a total lockdown in the Netherlands. Everything you normally would be able to visit or attend is closed down, like going to a museum, visit the movies or go out for a walk or bike ride, and drink a cup of coffee in a pub or restaurant.

My mother (86), is staying over from Christmas until New Year’s Day, and since she’s not too mobile anymore we needed to find something to do my whole family of three generations would enjoy.

I decided to invest in buying a shuffleboard this year.

I thought: ‘There will be no reason better than the one we have this year; the worldwide pandemic provides the right reason to buy us a shuffleboard, and play ‘sjoelen’ this year’.

Shuffleboard: the game

Shuffleboard – sjoelen- is a typical and old Dutch game for people starting eight years until old age.

In Dutch it’s called ‘sjoelen’, to be pronounced like shoe-lən.

You also can join real shuffleboard matches, but most people enjoy it as a recreative game to involve with friends or family.

To play, you need a shuffleboard and thirty wooden shuffle discs. The shuffleboard is a wooden board, like a shelf, measuring 2 meters by 40 centimetres.

It has small side shelves, and at the top, there are four boxes with small openings in which you need so slide the discs.

The sliding of the discs is the actual sjoelen.

Sjoelen is quite common in the Netherlands, as well as in Belgium. In Germany it’s called Jakkolo, and in Czech it’s called šulbak, like the Dutch word sjoelbak. In France, it’s called Billiard Hollandaise.

Counting

The boxes all have a number from 1 to 4, which are the points. The order is from left to right: 2, 3, 4 and 1. To count, you simply count the discs in the boxes and multiply them with their number. If you have a disc in all boxes, the count is doubled, meaning you don’t get 10 points, but 20 points. And this is for every disc that is doubled, so if you have three discs in all four boxes (60), and additional two in number 3 (6), your total of points adds up to 66.

Every shuffle turn contains three ‘sjoelbeurten’, meaning you slide the discs three times, leastways, all discs that are not yet in one of the boxes.

Preparation

To enable my family in playing shuffleboard, we needed to invest in a shuffleboard. These wooden things are costing quite some money (somewhat between 80 and 190 euro). Since I didn’t know how often we would go to play, I invested in the cheapest official sized one: the 81 euro costing ‘ThysToys Sjoelbak’.

Unfortunately, my board hadn’t been varnished, meaning I had to do that myself. Adding the total costs up to 115 euro. As of 140-160 euro, you buy yourself a ready-to-use shuffleboard. You can order it online, and I presume they can be shipped to everywhere in the world.

Potje sjoelen – playing shuffleboard

Yesterday, we enjoyed a game of shuffleboard with a part of my family. My mother, my son and his girlfriend, and myself engaged in a game. We all got three turns, so at the end, we shuffled the discs for nine times over the board.

My mother started saying she couldn’t play, meanwhile invent excuses like ‘I’m too old’; ‘I don’t have enough power anymore in my arm muscles’, but she proved herself to be wrong: she could shuffle like the best.

In the end, it was an ex aequo between my son and myself: we both gained 270 points, in threes turns.

Luckily, we still have the pictures (and cat Lilly thinks we’re insane…).

Sjoelen (shuffleboard)

In deze laatste dagen van het jaar zijn veel mensen samen met hun (niet te uitgebreide) gezin, net als ik met het mijne.

Voordat de vakantie begon bedacht ik wat we zouden kunnen doen, aangezien we in een totale lockdown in Nederland zitten. Alles wat je normaal gesproken zou kunnen bezoeken of bijwonen is gesloten, zoals naar een museum gaan, een filmpje pikken of een wandeling of fietstocht maken, en een kopje koffie drinken in een café of restaurant.

Mijn moeder (86) blijft van kerst tot nieuwjaarsdag, en aangezien ze niet al te mobiel meer is, moesten we iets vinden om te doen waar het hele gezin van drie generaties van zou kunnen meegenieten.

Ik besloot dit jaar te investeren in de aanschaf van een sjoelbak. Ik dacht: ‘Er is geen betere reden dan die we dit jaar hebben; de wereldwijde pandemie biedt de juiste gelegenheid om een ​​sjoelbak te kopen ‘.

Sjoelen: het spel

Sjoelen is een typisch en oud-Hollands spel voor jong en oud. In het Engels heet het ‘suffleboard’of ‘shovelboard’. Je kunt ook meedoen aan echte sjoelwedstrijden, maar de meeste mensen genieten er als een recreatief spel van at je samen met vrienden of familie kunt doen.

Om te spelen heb je nodig: een sjoelbak en dertig houten sjoelschijven. De sjoelbak is een houten plank van 2 meter bij 40 centimeter. Het heeft kleine plankjes aan de zijkant en aan de bovenkant zitten vier vakjes met kleine openingen waar je de schijven in moet schuiven. Het schuiven met de schijven is het eigenlijke sjoelen.

Sjoelen wordt vrij veel gedaan in Nederland, maar ook in België. In Duitsland heet het Jakkolo, en in het Tsjechisch heet het šulbak, afgeleid van het Nederlandse woord sjoelbak. In Frankrijk heet het Billiard Hollandaise.

Tellen

De vakjes in de sjoelbak hebben allemaal een nummer van 1 tot 4, dit zijn de punten. De volgorde is van links naar rechts: 2, 3, 4 en 1. Om te tellen, tel je gewoon de schijven in de vakjes en vermenigvuldig je ze met hun aantal. Als je een schijf in alle vakjes hebt, wordt de telling verdubbeld, wat betekent dat je geen 10 punten maar 20 punten krijgt. En dit is voor elke schijf die wordt verdubbeld, dus als je drie schijven hebt in alle vier de vakken (60) en nog eens twee in nummer 3 (6), dan is je totale aantal punten 66.

Elke sjoelbeurt bevat drie speelbeurten, wat betekent dat je de drie keer sjoelt, in beurt twee en drie gebruik je de schijven die nog niet in een van de vakjes zitten.

Mijn moeder begon met zeggen dat ze niet kon spelen, en verzon ondertussen smoejes zoals ‘ik ben te oud’; ‘ik heb niet genoeg kracht meer in mijn armspieren’, maar ze bewees zelf dat ze het bij het verkeerde eind had: ze kon sjoelen als de beste.

Uiteindelijk was het een ex aequo tussen mijn zoon en mijzelf: we behaalden allebei 270 punten, in drie beurten.

Gelukkig hebben we de foto’s nog (en poes Lilly denkt dat we van Lotje getikt zijn).
